Boxed Mac & Cheese, Scalloped Potatoes, etc.

Is it okay to purchase grocery store boxed mac & cheese, scalloped potatoes, instant rice, boxed cake mix, etc. and store them in huge plastic 2'x 3' regular storage bins with lids? Must they be stored in Mylar or is just thick plastic bags ok?...all inside the storage bins? Can I throw a hand warmer in to eliminate oxygen? ( will that work?)

RESPONSE:

Please see: Storing Prepackaged Foods Long Term. This may answer your questions.

I personally would not store those types of foods more than 3-6 months. Those are the types of food products that I use for my "3-month pantry storage". I keep 3 or 4 on the shelf (in the basement where it is always cool) and when I use one, I buy another - always putting the purchase date on each one. That way I can be sure to rotate the oldest out first.

Hand warmers are not the same as O2 absorbers. They work similarly, but not as well.
