Food is all and good, but I've run up against, bugs, rodents, and leaking cans...need help in HOW to store it.
Other items also need attention...
- extra cash (in small bills)
- put an inventory of your household items, insurance, deeds, important papers, genealogy, etc. on a flash or thumb drive
- LEARN how to shelter in place
- drills for your family to follow(fire, evacuation, etc.) because not everyone will be at home when an emergency happens
- LEARN how to turn off utilities
- practice how to use emergency fuels and cooking
- collect recipes on using food storage
- making your own soaps, etc.
- Learn how to take care of pets, children, elderly
- health issues
- sanitation and keeping clean
- communications (phones will probably not be in use)
- learn how to garden and how to store it, save seeds etc.
- always know how to keep yourself and family members calm /store items for that
- store clothing/fabric
Know how the SYSTEM works. Talk to your 1st responders, fire, police, learn the ICS system (FEMA) who's in charge, and what can and won't be done, what's available and when to expect it. Join a CERT class, etc. Get your Ham radio license.
Knowledge, plus temporal items, spiritual strength (hope) will help you to not fear.
This all takes time-organization-and practice.
