If I bury food in cans or packaged foods in a steel 55 gallon drum four or five feet into the ground will the drum keep a constant temperature like a root cellar?

Burying Food for Long Term Storage
by: ADMIN - Joan

I'm sure it would keep cool as the ground maintains a pretty even temperature, especially 4 or 5 feet deep.

But then the questions would be:

- How difficult is it going to be if you need to use the food?

- Can you guarantee the moisture from the ground will not rust the steel drum or get inside and ruin the food?

I personally don't think it's practical, from many aspects, to bury the food in the ground. It should be stored somewhere that is easy to get at and use and rotate. Yes, rotate - even it you plan to store it long term. Rotating your food supplies assures the most nutritious food for your family.

For a hand-powered grain mill, I like the one pictured above. You can find it HERE. It's not terribly expensive.
